What is permaculture?

We’ve thrown the word around a little in our previous posts, but some of you may be wondering…. What is permaculture?
At Feed Your Soul, we intend to grow using a ‘No-Dig’ method and permaculture principles. Permaculture is often thought of as just a gardening method. In fact, it is a lifestyle which whole communities can abide by with hopes of creating a more sustainable future for all life on Earth.
Permaculture (previously known as permanent agriculture) was originally created by Bill Mollison and David’s Holmgren in the 1970s. They witnessed the way that European agriculture was being carried out, and set about creating a system that would honour the Earth and let it thrive, using techniques mirroring that of nature. This then evolved to be a way that communities can live - through being conscious of the way homes are built and the actions we take that have repercussions on the planet.
Permaculture is built on 3 main principles - Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. These are not new principles, but have been adapted from the ways that indigenous people have lived for centuries.
Earth Care - this principle holds the vision of care for all living and non-living things. It asks us to first design our garden and the methods used with the Earths longevity in mind, and then extend it further out to the other ways we live and interact with our Earth. Each decision we make is a step closer towards our connection to her, or away. Caring habits in the garden can then transpire into a beautiful relationship with our planet.
People Care - this principle asks us to understand that people are not expendable, and should not be abused or excluded. It focuses around a community ethos in which there are no elites, and everyone’s individual needs are taken into account. There is a huge emphasis on the power of community here, and the change that can be made from the ground up. When it comes to starting a permaculture garden, it asks us to ensure all involved have an equal part to play, and have a say in how the garden is used, laid out and what is grown. It asks us to take into account the needs of each individual, and to distribute jobs accordingly.
Fair share - this last ethic acknowledges that we all have to share this Earth with all living things and future generations. Our actions impact everyone, and the gardens positive momentum should be spread far beyond just those who have taken part in growing.
Permaculture gives the perfect blue print to design sustainable systems. We can’t wait to be a part of this movement, and to learn and share its benefits with you all as we go!
